Inside a boiler, water is heated by the burner flame to produce steam or hot water. At the same time, the water cools down the steel walls of the furnace tube (fire tube), preventing overheating.
When the surface of the furnace tube gets covered with scale deposits, primarily composed of mineral salts, a highly insulating layer is formed. This layer prevents the steel from receiving the cooling effect it requires, causing the metal temperature to rise excessively.
If this condition persists, the steel may eventually overheat and lose its mechanical strength, potentially leading to structural failure.
In the most severe cases, this can result in a dangerous explosion capable of completely destroying the boiler shell and placing personnel and facilities at serious risk.
What Is scale?
Scale is a solid deposit that forms inside boilers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and hydraulic systems. These deposits adhere to steel surfaces and are primarily composed of mineral salts such as carbonates, sulfates, and silicates.
Unfortunately, scale forms highly insulating layers that hinder the proper transfer of heat and prevent adequate cooling of boiler metal surfaces by the water.
As a result, scale deposits cause boiler metals to overheat, reducing their mechanical strength and leading to permanent deformation and possible cracking. In extreme cases, when internal pressure is combined with weakened metal, a violent explosion can occur.
For this reason, proper water treatment is not optional—it is a critical component of both operational safety and system efficiency.
